Yercaud – the hidden gem of the Eastern Ghats

There were times when life was simple, starting with the first rays of sun, work occupying most of the day and things coming to a standstill at the fall of night. We now live in a connected world where ubiquitous devices dominate and it’s nearly impossible to find the line dividing our personal and professional lives. It’s natural that at times the monotony of our routines starts getting to us and we long for a reinvigorating break.

The map of South India is dotted with a number of beautiful and popular beaches and hill stations. Personally speaking, I like beaches, but I just love the enchanting hills. There’s something magical about them – the greenery, the aroma in the air, meandering roads, clear streams, the views of the valley and those of the majestic peaks that appear to touch the skies, the mild chill of the breeze that warms the soul jaded by city life, the soft folk music that only my ears can hear, and so much more – the feeling is inexplicable.

Ooty-Coonoor, Kodaikanal and Munnar are amongst the most popular hill stations of South India and the first few that anyone living in the cities here would visit. But Mother Nature has been kind enough to bestow beauty in abundance here, and, over a period of time, the quintessential wanderer discovers hidden gems – those that offer solace from the maddening city life and are not yet commercially exploited.

Yercaud is one such destination that those who have Bangalore as their home can visit over a weekend and go back rejuvenated. The name means a lake amidst the forest, and true to its name, the place has a beautiful lake surrounded by lush green forests.

Yercaud is a small town and does not have many places for sightseeing to offer. So, leave the baggage of expectations behind and just go there to unwind and enjoy the nature. We visited the place in October and the weather did not disappoint us – it was cool and misty. The drive from Bangalore is about 220 kms and takes about 4 hours. The key to enjoying the drive is to start early from Bangalore, preferably before day break. Stop over at one of the many popular eateries by the highway for a breakfast of delicious idli-vadas, dosas and hot coffee. The green mountains near Dharmapuri present a treat to the eyes in the morning.

We stayed at GReaT Trails, Yercaud. This place offers comfortable valley view, pool side, panorama view rooms and penthouses. The property is well-maintained and food at Salem Heights restaurant is great. The best part of the stay here was the view of the valley from Skywalk and a walk through the green trails at the place.

Places to visit:

Yercaud lake: Enjoy boating in the beautiful lake choosing one of motor boat, row boat or pedal boat options.

Killiyur falls: For those who love some adventure, take a trek down to Killiyur falls. Here you can experience the falls at a very close distance.

Yercaud Rose Garden: Even if you visit this place at a time when roses are not in full bloom, it is a great place for clicking some pictures all round the year. Try the photographers at the garden for a family picture and you would have a memory to cherish.

Lady’s Seat, Gent’s Seat and Children’s Seat: The best time to visit these places is just before sunset. They offer an awesome view of the sky at this time.

Pagoda Point: This place offers a beautiful view of the valley and is best visited in the morning.

Montfort School: Visit this place on a Sunday. On our last visit, the premises were open to visitors but we were not lucky enough this time.

For us, it was a relaxing weekend visit to Yercaud and we are carrying back memories to cherish. Hopefully, we’ll find another hidden gem for our next trip. For now, it’s time to head back…

And miles to go before I sleep,  And miles to go before I sleep.”
